General Terminology
Horse & Zebra:
Mare - A female 4 years and older
Stallion - An intact male 4 years and older
Gelding - A neutered male horse
Foal - General term for a horse under a year
Filly - A female horse under 4 years
Colt - A male horse under 4 years
Weanling - A foal that has been weaned (generally between 3 and 6 months)
Yearling - A horse between 1 and 2 years
Donkey:
Jenny or Jennet - A female 4 years and older
Jack - An intact male 4 years and older
All other terminology is the same as horses.

Equines are measured from the ground to the highest point of their withers. The unit of measurement used are "hands", with one hands equaling 4 inches. Horses fall between 14.2 and 19hh (hands high); under 14.2 hands and they are usually classified as ponies.
